The Story Behind the Research (Intro)
Do you realize how far we've come? Do you understand that technology is growing at an increasingly rapid rate?
Society has been changed greatly from the creation of social media outlets. Before the invention of the internet and social networking, the world kind of lived in the dark in terms of knowledge about each other. People can now connect with each other to a whole new level than before. We are now able to share videos and pictures with others who are miles away with just the press of a few clicks. People can become friends with others in different countries, something they otherwise wouldn't have been able to do. Virtually everyone is now on social networking and are more involved with the internet more than ever. "On average, Americans spent 7.6 hours a month using social media, with the majority of individuals accessing social networking sites through cell phones." The whole thing is viewed as a welcome change to how we interact with each other but is it as good for us as we think it is? Something I've always wondered is, how is this new social technology really affecting us as people? I've noticed throughout my day to day life for a while that our culture is now becoming more and more dependent on social networking. People just aren't interacting in person like they used to. It also seems to me that a lot of people are fine with doing most of their socializing through technology and don't care about losing real life personal interaction. I know that social media was made with the intent to help people connect with each other, but is it possible that it's mostly just disconnecting us from our own reality? Could we end up going down a path that leads everyone into essentially becoming human robots?
